01Abstract

Firms often improve operations, disclosure, governance, or financing capacity without an immediate and proportional market-capitalization response. Could a single unresolved concern limit the market's response to improvements elsewhere in the firm? Classical multifactor and machine-learning models ask which risks or characteristics explain or predict returns. We ask whether the relatively weakest among several coexisting firm conditions receives disproportionate valuation weight. We model equity value as the lower envelope of lens-specific valuations. A hard minimum makes one lens locally binding; a soft minimum assigns continuous, state-dependent weights. We use exploratory factor analysis on 268 accounting characteristics to construct five firm-state lenses, with membership and weights determined by the loading structure rather than by an economic taxonomy, and rank each lens within industry, size, and quarter peers. We document a weakest lens effect : beyond the additive effects of all five lens ranks, a firm's weakest lens carries an incremental association with next-quarter returns, and it survives saturated joint rank-quintile controls. Gating the test at the bottom decile and then the bottom quintile of the peer distribution, the association is concentrated among firms whose weakest lens is weak against peers and not merely lowest within the firm. In baseline soft-min specifications, it fades steadily as the gate is widened. We then investigate whether analyst attention may help explain this pattern. We use large language models on 1.7 million earnings-call questions and find that, in baseline specifications, the weakest lens attracts a larger share of questions, especially when it is also weak among peers; this cross-sectional alignment is consistent with an attention channel as one possible explanation for the observed return pattern. The framework offers managers seeking to maximize market capitalization a new perspective on prioritizing scarce managerial attention.
